The game

How it works

Each number stands for a letter, and the same number is always the same letter. Work out the substitution and the verse appears, word by word. It is the crossword's quieter cousin: slow enough to think, short enough for a coffee break — and the reward is a verse you have just read closely enough to reconstruct from nothing.

  1. Pick a puzzle Today's Daily Puzzle, a book of the Bible, a guided passage, or any verse you choose from the full library.
  2. Break the cipher Short words, repeated numbers, and apostrophes give you a foothold. Hints are there when you want one.
  3. Read what you revealed See the verse and its reference, keep a streak going — or send the verse to your memorization list so it stays with you.

Memorization that works

Spaced repetition built in. Each review reveals fewer letters until you can recall the verse with none — then it returns weeks later to be sure it stuck.

The Armor of God, Psalm 23, the Beatitudes, the Lord's Prayer — 180 passages worked through one verse at a time until you have completed the whole passage.

What it doesn't do

No account needed. No ads in the way. Nothing that knows who you are.

Install it and play — there is nothing to sign up for. RootText runs no advertising and no tracking, and the whole Bible ships inside it, so no connection is required to read, study or play. It sends us one thing: anonymous usage statistics — counts of which features are used and where people get stuck — with no name, no email, no location and never the verses you chose. You can turn them off in Settings. As RootText grows, online features — cloud sync between your devices, gifts and group subscriptions, community play — will arrive with clear notice, they will be your choice, and the core game will stay fully playable without an account. Read the privacy policy: it is still short.

RootText Free is not a trial. It never expires, and the heart of the app is in it: the Daily Puzzle every day, the whole Bible to read and browse, puzzle play across all four translations, memorization, streaks, and your statistics. It is deliberately sized for a daily rhythm rather than unlimited use — everyday allowances on puzzle play, replays, and hints, and starter-sized study lists. Play within them for as long as you like; nothing is ever taken away.

RootText Plus is for when the daily rhythm isn't enough: unlimited puzzles and replays, unlimited memorization and verse lists, your own custom topics, more hints that regenerate faster, and generous streak repair. Available monthly, yearly, or as a one-time lifetime purchase — and either way, reading Scripture is never behind the wall.

The name

Why “RootText”?

A root text is a source text — the one everything else is commentary on. The name says what the app is for, and points at where it is going: the Greek and Hebrew behind the English.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105. The lamp stays as the app's inner motif: the emblem is a cipher tile with a single flame above it — a puzzle, and light on the Word.
